Abstract
From ancient civilizations to modern times the mankind has been having an urge
to look beautiful and has been trying to find right instruments for the enhancement of
their appearance. Over the ages, cosmetics have been used to enhance a person’s
appearance and to improve the quality of their skin. Nowadays skin lightening and
tanning are two major areas that dominate the market of skincare and cosmetic products.
At the same time, the known safe compounds with skin color tuning activities are limited.
On the contrary, Russian herbal tradition is strong and well developed, while vast
territory of Russia provides a large pool of natural bioactive compounds. Here we

appearance and to improve the quality of their skin. Nowadays skin lightening and
tanning are two major areas that dominate the market of skincare and cosmetic products.
At the same time, the known safe compounds with skin color tuning activities are limited.
On the contrary, Russian herbal tradition is strong and well developed, while vast
territory of Russia provides a large pool of natural bioactive compounds. Here we
demonstrate the skin whitening and antioxidant potential of some of the most common
Russian herbs by in optimized and validated results of in vitro assays such as cell-free
mushroom tyrosinase activity assay and the and the oxygen radical absorbance
capacity assay (ORAC) assay.
Furthermore, the thesis describes a company called Russian Beauty Secret
(RBS), a start-up skin care manufacturer. Additionally, this thesis contains a business
plan to explore the commercial viability of RBS company. We discuss market trends and
the competitive environment, as well as a feasible business model.
