Abstract
Aroma diffusers are widely used to enjoy essential oils. However, traditional aroma diffusers
are not suitable for users of the current age. Three different angles of innovation using IoT
aroma diffusers are presented in this thesis, followed by a business plan based on the aroma
diffusers. During the COVID19 pandemic, many users use aroma diffuser to diffuse essential
oils for hygiene, despite limited research on the antimicrobial properties of essential oil vapors.
Thus, the first part of this thesis investigates the antimicrobial properties of several essential

Thus, the first part of this thesis investigates the antimicrobial properties of several essential
oils using an IoT aroma diffuser. The result has shown that Bergamot and Lemon essential oils
significantly reduce the microbial count on agar plates, while the other essential oils do not
show a significant effect on the microbial count. This shows the potential of using IoT aroma
diffusers as hygiene tools. With the rising tech-savvy aroma users, new requirements on aroma
diffusers start to emerge. The second part of this thesis explores the development of Aromeo
Alpha, a new IoT aroma diffuser that allows users to enjoy pure essential oil diffusion, with
the ability to blend, schedule, and monitor their diffusers remotely. While users can enjoy the
benefits of essential oils, they are not able to be fully immersed in the experience if their other
senses are distracted. The third part of this thesis explores the development of Aromeo Sense,
a multi-sensory aroma diffuser that incorporates elements of color therapy and sound therapy
together with aromatherapy. Following the development of the new IoT aroma diffusers, a
business plan is presented to show the market potential of the products. The business plan takes
the IoT aroma diffusers as main products, with refills of essential oils and other personal care
products as accessories.
