Abstract
Quantified-self technologies enables the delivery of real-time performance feedback on
individuals’ activities. Prior literature focuses on the impact of performance feedback that
provides implications for individuals. In this study, we examined societal-framing, a novel type
of framing that links individuals’ activities with their societal implications. We compared how
individual framing and societal framing of performance feedback can motivate users differently.
Building upon the construal level theory (CLT), we studied how different types of framing
influence users’ level of construal and subsequently affect the weights they give to desirability
considerations versus feasibility considerations when forming behavioural tendencies. We also

We also
investigated the effects of providing more elaborative information in performance feedback on
the perceived desirability of activities, and how this effect differed between individual and
societal framing. Through three studies, we found that individual framing induces a lower level
of construal and a higher weight for feasibility considerations; whereas societal framing induces
a higher level of construal and a higher weight for desirability considerations. In addition, a
higher level of elaborative information in performance feedback increases the desirability of
activities, and this effect is stronger under societal framing than under individual framing. This
paper provides important theoretical and practical implications.
