Dejiao was a spiritual writing group which founded in Chiuzhou area during Republican
period. It was established in late 1930s and rapidly developed in 1940s. Later it spread
throughout Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. Zi Jing Ge was established in 1962 at around Des
Voeux Road West and Nam Pak Hong. Many Chiuzhou merchants gathered in Nam Pak Hong
to deal their trading business in the morning and social activities at night. Some of those
Chiuzhou merchants became the founders of Zi Jing Ge.
Nowadays, Zi Jing Ge still practices spiritual writing. After 1949, Dejiao was banned in
Mainland China. Chiuzhou people brought their religious activities to Hong Kong. Zi Jing Ge
conducted spiritual writing for healing the sickness, solving the problems and developing a
whole set of annual religious activities. But due to the political and social changes after 1960s,
many religious organizations abandoned spiritual writing and registered their names under a
limited company or a charity organization. However, Zi Jing Ge still continues to practice
spiritual writing and whole following the trend to register as a limited company. They even
continue to manage the organization by spiritual writing. Managing the organization by
spiritual writing means everything is decided by spiritual writing under the messages from
immortals and deities. These types of urban religious organizations like Zi Jing Ge have
developed their own style of operation model.
As the religious organization dominated by Chiuzhou people, Zi Jing Ge not only has developed its own style, they also knew how to shift the boundary between Daoism and popular religion to develop its member community and various types of social networks as to maintain their operation. Moreover, Zi Jing Ge often re-interprets some of the religious and ethnical concepts, as well as personal relationship at different circumstances in order to facilitate its development and operation. The case of Zi Jing Ge reveals the ambiguity and plurality of Hong Kong Daoism in Hong Kong’s urban context.
