The Smart Antimicrobial Coating (the coating) was developed by KL group. It is a newly designed antimicrobial system developed by encapsulation method. The double-layer emulsion Antimicrobial Coating was first tested with procedures modified from traditional standard tests. The traditional tests recommended by the Association of Analytical Communities (AOAC) were only applicable to liquid disinfectant. Therefore, new protocols were developed to test for the durability and persistency of the Smart Antimicrobial Coating.
It could provide a long term protection against microorganisms, for example, S.aureus, E.coli, P.aeruginosa and B.subtilis. It was designed for application on frequently touched surfaces to prevent the accumulation of bacteria and thereby, stop indirect infection via inanimate surfaces. Also, the Smart Antimicrobial Coating was proven to be safe under normal utilization.
The performance was tested on different materials. Afterwards, the coating was put to tests for its activity under simulated cleaning and usage as well as its safety under normal use. Finally, the coating was tested in a human-involved setting in a computer barn inside the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) before having further tests in Tuen Mun Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital. All field study so far showed that the coated computer mice contained fewer aerobic bacteria than the uncoated ones. By statistical analysis, we had observed that many factors could affect the result of a field test, especially, human factors and specimen types.
All such tests unanimously had provided a solid base for further tests on the values of the coating. Last but not least, our survey showed that the public has generally a positive attitude of using Smart Antimicrobial Coating on frequently touched surfaces.
