The non-contact impedance measurement device has invented to monitor and interpret the
hydration process of cement pastes with different water-binder ratios and composites. An
arc of the Nyquist plot has been constructed with the non-contact impedance measurement
for cement-based materials. In order to trace back to the sources of the complex resistivity
behavior of cement-based materials, electrolyte, as the major conductive phase inside the
composites matrix, has been investigated along with cement pastes. An equivalent circuit
model for impedance spectroscopy (IS) of cement paste has been proposed with quite
different feature from the previous models.
The multi-phases conductivity was studied by using the non-contact impedance
measurement in this thesis. It extended the investigation from liquid-insulting solid
phases materials to liquid-conductive solid phases materials and liquid-gaseous-solid
phases materials. The impedance response of conductive fillers such as CNTs and the
insulating air bubble were investigated. Two arcs phenomenon was found and discussed in
Nyquist plane. In addition, the corresponding circuit models were proposed to explain the
additional capacitance behavior.
Moreover, the methods of using the non-contact impedance measurement to identify the
dispersion of CNTs in cement matrix as well as to predict the elastic modulus development
of concrete were proposed. These methods showed a reliable feasibility and demostrated
the great potential in real applications.
