The construction and display of a smooth surface defined by weighted points in R³

Given a set of weighted points in R3, the skin as defined by Edelsbrunner [l] is a differentiable and orientable 2-manifold surrounding the alpha shape of the points. The skin varies continuously with the points, while preserving the homotopy equivalence between the alpha shape and the body enclosed by the skin. The skin has potential applications to molecular modeling and docking and to geometric metamorphosis. In the thesis, we design and implement a system to construct and display the skin for a given set of weighted points in R3.
