Abstract
This uncommon French map of China has interesting topographical detail. It shows the Great Wall, and Korea is depicted as a strangely truncated island. In the upper right corner there is a short description of China and the Emperor. The mapmaker, Pierre DuVal, was the nephew of Nicolas Sanson, one of the founders of 17th century French cartography. DuVal's outline for China is derived from some of the earlier smaller Sanson maps first published in "L'Asie en Plusieures Cartes" in 1652.
