Abstract
Apollonius showed that all the conics could be considered as sections of the same cone and he introduced the names parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola.
This edition, prepared by the Renaissance scientist Federico Commandino (1509-75), "Restaurator Mathematicarum," contains the first four books, the only ones which came down to us in the original Greek. Books V-VII, translated from the Arabic, were first published in 1661 and the eighth and final book is lost.
