Abstract
Piano tones are inharmonic due to the stiffness of the strings. Most data-reduced synthesis techniques, such as wavetable synthesis, produce harmonic sounds. This makes matching piano tones problematic with these methods. This work introduces an automated group synthesis method for matching piano tones using genetic algorithm optimization. The new method allows simulation of the piano's inharmonicity. We have matched various tones from the lowest to the highest range on the piano, and our listening tests indicate the matched tones are indistinguishable from the originals.
