Abstract
As more and more small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) adopt information technology (IT) in their daily business operations or even strategic planning, the positive impacts of information technology (IT) are no longer a privilege of large organizations, but also of SMEs. Studies on adoption and diffusion of IT in SMEs have generated a lot of interest over the past decade. However, there has been very little research published on the adoption of electronic data interchange (EDI) in SMEs. In order to provide greater insight and understanding of EDI adoption in SME, this study examines the key factors that influence EDI adoption in the SME context. Based on previous related studies, a research model consisting of seven factors under three categories, namely characteristics of innovation, organizational context and external influence, is proposed. A large-scale survey of 3000 SMEs was conducted and a total of 644 SMEs responded, which consisted of 245 adopters and 399 non-adopters. The factors were tested for their relationships with EDI adoption by using logistic regression analysis. The findings indicate that the critical factors that determine EDI adoption in the SME context are perceived direct benefits, perceived cost, IT knowledge and government influence. Based on these findings, implications and future research for adoption of EDI in SME are provided.
