Abstract
A rare and uncommon map, it appeared in Bund II, Part XIV of Stöcklein's "Neuer Welt-Bott", a German collection of Jesuit letters and accounts of all regions of the world, published in 1729. The unusual and distorted delineation shows the islands at the southwestern approach to the Pearl River Delta and adjacent mainland coasts. Macao is shown upper center, joined to the mainland and on the Eastern (wrong) side of the Pearl River estuary. St. Francis Xavier, one of the Jesuit founding saints, died in November 1552 on Sancian Island. The map and accompanying account in Stocklein were based on the original description of Jesuit Father Gaspar Castner, who had the responsibility to build a memorial chapel for St. Xavier on the island in 1700.
