Abstract
Liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) light valve has recently been recognized as an alternative approach for the fabrication of active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD). The major advantage is matured silicon fabrication technology. Very advance display drivers and fine pixels can be integrated together as a self-contained and high-resolution display. The silicon light valve has many advantages like high aperture ratio, low power consumption and small in size. With these advantages, silicon light valve is very suitable for high-definition projection system and head mounted display system.
In this thesis work, there will have an introduction on the recent trend of the display technology first. Some detail information on the LCoS microdisplay will also be given in the first chapter. Then, three different multimedia video interface controller boards, which are designed for the LCoS microdisplay application, will be introduced. In chapter 2, a color sequential display controller will be talked. This color sequential controller is designed for the standard definition television (SDTV) LCoS microdisplay in head mount application. Then, two types of multimedia video interface boards will be analyzed in chapter 3. The first type is designed for analog video input including progressive and interlaced formats. The second type is used for digital visual interface (DVI) signal. Lastly, an advanced multimedia interface controller board will be described in chapter 4. This new controller has the analog and DVI video decoding function integrated on it and also the frame rate conversion feature is added.
