Abstract
As the advance of mobile device capabilities and the improvements of speed and coverage of mobile network, Web browsing using mobile devices is expected to be increasingly popular. Despite the inventions of various webpage conversion tools to adapt an ordinary webpage to mobile devices, they are generally overwhelming mobile users with complete information from the original webpage. Actually webpage conversion could be performed more intelligently by delivering only the useful information to the mobile device. This thesis explores the area of partial mobile webpage adaptation which only delivers the useful parts of webpages to the mobile user. A design framework for guiding the design of different partial webpage adaptations is proposed. One concrete partial mobile webpage adaptation server, the CRAM proxy server, is developed. Definitions of useful information, the mechanisms of the CRAM proxy server and algorithms for real-time information retrieval are discussed in detail. Experiments and evaluations on the proxy server are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the partial mobile webpage adaptation approach. Finally the difficulties faced in developing the CRAM proxy server are discussed.
