The future of the Hong Kong logistics industry has become a controversial topic in recent years. On the one hand, the Government is strongly committed to keeping Hong Kong as the leading logistics center in the world. On the other hand, faced with the rapidly growing Mainland logistics sector, Hong Kong’s competitive advantage seems to be diminishing. However, no matter whether we are optimists or pessimists, we all agree that Hong Kong has to take action in order to keep the industry growing healthily.
This study, which aims to reveal the real situation and explore opportunities for the logistics industry, provides insight into possible actions which can help the latter. To begin with, an industry survey was conducted to obtain a snapshot of the logistics industry in Hong Kong. Statistics analysis was then performed on the data obtained. Research findings of this thesis identify the decision maker who decides the transportation route of cargoes, which can help the Hong Kong government to focus on a particular group of decision makers to attract cargo to Hong Kong. The thesis also builds up a Port Attractiveness Assessment Model to assess the attractiveness of a port to cargo, based on the survey results. We also make suggestions to the government and Hong Kong universities regarding the development of the logistics industry, according to information extracted from the interview results.
