Today there is an increasing demand for flexible bistable LCDs in many applications such as mobile phones, smart cards and integrated displays. With regard to the market demand and technological requirements, mechanically stabilized bistable ferroelectric liquid crystal display in flexible substrates was investigated.
Several alignment materials (e.g. SD1, CD1, SD2 and SDA2, etc.) were investigated and the alignment properties of the SD-1/SDA-2 azo dye mixture were used in conjugation with plastic substrates because of its outstanding performance among those proposed materials. Excellent alignment with high anchoring energy can be achieved with a polarized UV dose less than 1.5 J/cm
2. A prototype passive matrix 9-digit flexible TN-LCD for smart card applications showing excellent electro-optical properties is demonstrated.
Of key importance to the use of any liquid crystal materials in an electro-optical device is the issue of alignment. Apart from the alignment problem, the FLC and is also sensitive to mechanical deformation; therefore special stabilization of the LC cell is needed for the use of FLC together with flexible substrates. Two different possibilities of stabilization of the FLC material were presented, photo-sensitive monomer formed polymer wall and Photopolyimide spacers in a regular pattern formed by photo-lithography.
The structures stabilized the FLC cell, which increase the tolerance against mechanical deformation, were demonstrated. The influence of bistability in FLC cell on flexible substrates with various photo-sensitive monomer solutions was investigated. Stabilization polymer wall structure formed by mixing different concentrations of photomonomer in the FLC on flexible substrates will be presented.
The electro-optical properties of the stabilized cells were investigated as a function of a bending deformation and concentration of monomer of the flexible FLC cell. The result of this thesis will enhance understanding of mechanically stabilization by Photopolyimide spacers or polymer wall for the application in photo-aligned bistable FLC displays.
