Huygens was an important Dutch mathematician, astronomer, and horologist. His study of pendulums led to his inventing pendulum clocks, described in this book. These clocks were a revolutionary breakthrough in time-keeping; leading to many other discoveries (Galileo had timed his experiments using his pulse). The book is also notable for having the first formula for the period of an ideal mathematical pendulum.
