Abstract
This research project covers the development process of microcapsules that contain core
material carrying charged pigments so that they can be used in electrophoretic display modules.
The microcapsules are synthesized using gelatine and gum arabic as the biopolymer materials
to form the microcapsule walls and undergoing the process of complex coacervation, which is
induced through pH level adjustment. The formed capsule walls are cross-linked with the use
of a cross-linking agent. The capsules have to go through a cooling process as well, in order to
harden the capsule walls and make them sufficiently robust for electrophoretic display
application. This thesis will also show a simple prototype of an electrophoretic display module

demonstrating the movement of the charged pigment particles in the microcapsules and the
image formation from the colour changes that occur due to the electrophoretic behaviour.
