The thesis explores the integral role of colour in shaping the perception of urban public spaces. This research is conducted within the framework of environmental psychology and urban study, emphasizing how colour schemes influence spatial experience and identity in urban settings.
The thesis is divided into two primary analytical studies. The first study focuses on the colour schemes of the MTR (Mass Transit Railway) stations in Hong Kong. It investigates how specific colours used in these public transportation hubs aid in navigation, enhance aesthetic appeal, and reflect cultural and historical contexts. The methodological approach includes colour collection from various stations and an online survey to gather subjective evaluations of these colours by daily commuters. The second study explores the role of colour prioritization in urban renewal projects within the urban villages of Shenzhen and Guangzhou, focusing on how it influences public perceptions. This investigation adopts a consistent methodological framework, gathering data through surveys and direct colour sampling from the environment. Through comparative analysis, it aims to uncover the varied effects of colour use in improving urban quality of life and strengthening the cultural identity of the cities.
The findings from these studies suggest that colour not only has a profound impact on spatial orientation and psychological comfort but also serves as a powerful tool in urban identity formation and community engagement. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the sensory dimensions of urban design. It offers practical insights for urban planners and designers aiming to create more inclusive and engaging urban environments.
