Hsi Hsi is arguably the most fascinating fiction writer now practicing in Hong Kong. She started her writing career in the mid 1950's and is still highly productive. Among the various genres she practices, fiction is one that gains most recognition.
This thesis attempts to review the development of the styles of Hsi Hsi's fiction and to assess her achievement within the context of contemporary Hong Kong literature as well as the realm of Chinese fiction. Chapter one gives a brief account of Hsi Hsi's life and the periodization of her fiction; her ideas of fiction writing are also examined. Chapter two reviews the formation and development of the style of her fiction in early stage and the role of My City as a watershed. Chapter three focuses on her various creative attempts on both form and content of fiction writing. The last chapter discusses the achievements of Hsi Hsi in terms of broadening the boundary of fiction and joining Hong Kong literature with the realm of world literature.
